Food Sensitivities Q & A

What are food sensitivities?

A food sensitivity is an immune system reaction to a food that causes symptoms that aren’t life-threatening. By comparison, a food allergy is an immune system reaction that can lead to life-threatening symptoms, such as anaphylaxis, which can send your body into a state of shock, affecting your blood pressure and respiration.

The reactions created by a food sensitivity can be delayed by hours, making it difficult to determine what food is causing your symptoms. Additionally, you may end up ignoring your symptoms or confusing them with other health issues.

The team at Prima Health Clinic takes pride in providing comprehensive care and offers many medical tests to find answers to your health concerns, including food sensitivity screening.

What symptoms indicate I may have a food sensitivity?

The symptoms caused by a food sensitivity may not be what you would expect, leading you to think they have a different cause. Common symptoms include:

  • Migraines
  • Abdominal pain
  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Inability to lose weight, even with exercise and diet change
  • Skin rashes
  • Anxiety
  • Infertility
  • Joint pain
  • Changes in behavior or mood

If you suffer from fibromyalgia or irritable bowel syndrome, your pain and discomfort may be due to a food sensitivity.

How are food sensitivities tested?

The specialists at Prima Health Clinic use a highly specialized food sensitivity test to determine the foods that may be behind your symptoms. Prior to your food sensitivity test, your specialist may first run a gut health assessment to look for markers of a food sensitivity.

The food sensitivity test offered at Prima Health Clinic assesses your body’s reaction to more than 200 foods, including commonly consumed choices such as chicken, rice, bananas, and tomatoes. The information generated by the test provides you with a list of foods that may be responsible for your symptoms.

What happens after my food sensitivity test?

After you’ve completed your food sensitivity testing, you and your specialist at Prima Health Clinic work together to create a healthy eating plan focused on avoiding the foods that cause symptoms. If needed, your specialist may recommend nutrient deficiency testing and supplementation.

Food sensitivities often go undiagnosed due to the variation in symptoms. To get all the answers to your health questions, call Prima Health Clinic today or book online.
